Haneda Airport International Terminal to Kyoto
Difficulty Level ★★★☆☆
Reference:
- Japan Vlog Day 1: Getting from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Kyoto on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen Bullet Train (3min 47sec)
Direction:
- If you need to get some cash in Japanese yen, look for an ATM run by 7-eleven, which should be on your right (and possibly left as well) hand side as you walk out the customs area.
- Once you get out of the customs area, look for Keikyu Train ticket counters.
- Not the Tokyo Monorail.
- Buy a PASMO train card per person, and charge at least 1,000 yen (US$10) each, 3,000 yen if you are using it for a week.
- Pasmo will work with in Tokyo, also in Kyoto and Osaka as well.
- How to buy and charge a PASMO card (1:08)
- Go through the ticket gate with the PASMO you just bought (tap the sensor) and take an elevator down to the platform.
- Get on a train for Shinagawa, Shinbashi, Oshiage, or Narita Airport.
- But NOT the ones for Yokohama, Kawasaki, or Kanazawa Bunko. All depart from the same platform.
Shinagawa is roughly 15~20min away though depending on the train you ride. All the trains in the right direction will stop at Shinagawa.
- Once you get to Shinagawa, take an escalator/stairs UP, walk on the ramp for the the JR Transfer gate (and tap the sensor) to get into the JR side of Shinagawa station, and walk to the Shinkansen (bullet trains) gate.
- To go through the transfer gate, you will need a PASMO or any other train card. If you don't have one, you will need to go down the stair, exit and do a sort of detour.
Shinkansen platforms are basically on the other side of the station, a good 2~3 min walk. - Once you get there, buy tickets for Kyoto reserved seats on NOZOMI (fastest).
- It should be JPY13,910/person. They will ask you to present your PASMO card you just used to come into the JR side.
Nozomi leaves every 15~20min, so missing one is not a big deal.
- Proceed to the platform, and get on the train, in the car and the seat that's specified on your ticket.
- Kyoto is roughly 2hours and 10min (3rd stop, after Shin-Yokohama and Nagoya). You can buy and drink beer if you like.
- Once you get out of the train, take an escalator down to the concourse level, get through a ticketing gate, get out from the Hachijo side (south side) exit, and the hotel is 3min walk (maybe less) to your right.
- Check-in.
The hard part is #2, and #5 and #6. Everything else should be straightforward.
